Aston Martin is a
name that spells classic beauty, high performance level, and quality
craftsmanship. Lionel Martin, whose name is half of the derivation of the
company name (the other being Aston Hill, a place where Martin used to race),
started the company in 1914 with Robert Bamford. The two had been able to
register their first car in 1915 before they put production on hold upon the
outbreak of World War I. The company has since experienced various eras of
ownership, but has remained consistent in its testament of strength and
passion. Aston Martin has enjoyed a long and illustrious history, spanning nine
decades. During this time, Aston Martin has steadfastly upheld all the elements
that are at the very core of its cars: power, beauty and soul.
Major Aston Martin Milestones:
1922 – Aston
Martin first appeared overseas to compete in the French Grand Prix. Bamford and
Martin produced cars that subsequently set world speed and endurance records at
Brooklands.
1928 – Aston
Martin first joined the Le Mans 24 Hour race, but did not win until 1951 when
the DB2 won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the 3 liter
class.
2006 – Aston
Martin presented its first four door car called the Rapide under the form of a
concept car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Actual
production is set to start in 2009.
Interesting Aston Martin Fact:
The most famous
Aston Martin car is the DB5 due to its use by James Bond in “Goldfinger”
(1964). Several other Aston Martin cars have been used in other James Bond
movies. In the latest movie with Daniel Craig, 007’s classic DB5 had to be
converted to automatic since the actor did not know how to drive manual cars.
