Those four
interlinked rings are easily recognizable as a symbol of premium German
workmanship in the automobile industry. Auto Union Deutschland Ingolstadt’s
(Audi) emblem represents the four brands that made up its amalgamation: Audi,
DKW, Horch and Wanderer. Audi’s history can be traced back to 1899 when Horch,
an automobile company, was founded by August Horch. He was later forced to
leave and start another company. Since his own last name was no longer
available for his use, he used Audi, which is the Latin equivalent of the
German Horch, meaning “to listen”. After the 1932 merger of the four marques,
Audi went through troubled times during the war and later under socialist rule.
Since then, Audi has gone through different ownerships, including Daimler-Benz
in 1958 and Volkswagen in 1964. However, throughout its long history, Audi has
always been known for its sophistication and innovation.
Major Audi Milestones:
1978 – Audi introduced the world’s first five-cylinder diesel engine in the Audi 100.
1989 – Audi developed direct injection technology, which made diesel engine about 30% more efficient.
2008 – Audi introduced the new TDI engines with the ultra-low emission standard, the world’s cleanest diesel engines in production vehicles.
Interesting Audi Fact:
Audi’s historical Le Mans win is the first victory for a diesel engine at Le Mans. It also set a new distance record for the current circuit layout.
