“To build a good car, a fast car, the best in
class.” W.O. Bentley’s simple and straightforward words from the early 20th
century have proven to be an effective though unofficial mission statement for
Bentley Motors. Dating back to 1919, the company rose from its modest
beginnings to triumph in the field of automotive power and performance. Bentley
cars have always been handcrafted by generations of passionate workers with the
company’s tradition of zeal and perfection. Despite now being owned by
Volkswagen AG, Bentley Motors continues to stand for British authenticity and
pride.
Major Bentley Milestones:
1923 – A Bentley was the only foreign entry at the first Le Mans 24 Hours. It led the race, setting the fastest lap, only to lose on account of a punctured tire, a suspected sabotage.
1929 – The Bentley’s most dominant Le Mans win was in 1929 when it took the first four places. The same Speed Six won again the following year.
2002 – The Queen of England was gifted with the new Bentley State Limousine in recognition of her Golden Jubilee year.
Interesting Bentley Fact:
Each new Bentley
model car is handcrafted for 450 hours. It bears the license plate “1 WO” upon
its introduction to the press in honor of its founder, Walter Owen Bentley. The
company also owns the “WO 1” license plate.
