The name “BMW”
may have a connotation of class, sophistication and money – lots of it, but the
name simply stands for Bayerische Motoren
Werke or Bavarian Motor Works. The company was founded in 1913 and had its
beginnings with aircraft engines. It shifted its production to motorcycles in
1923 and later included automobiles in 1928. Contrary to popular belief, the
BMW emblem does not represent a propeller, but the color checks of the Bavarian
flag. The company remains to hold a commanding presence in the automotive
industry as it continues its heritage of excellence and success.
Major BMW Milestones:
1976 – Despite BMW’s long history of wins in various races and motoring events, 1976 was the only time it won in the 24 hours of Daytona.
1987 – BMW introduced the 750i and the 750iL, the first German cars with a V12 engine, after almost fifty years.
2008 – After years of winning the grand prix in Formula One as an engine supplier, BMW won its first race as a constructor at the Grand Prix of Canada with Robert Kubica at the wheel.
Interesting BMW Fact:
Many have taken
to calling a BMW car a “Bimmer”, which has its origins from the more British-sounding
“Beemer”. This is an abbreviation adapted for the BSA (Birmingham Small Arms
Company) motorcycles, which were frequently raced against BMW motorcycles. The
term shifted to refer to BMW motorcycles over time. When it crossed the
Atlantic, Americans began using it to refer to BMW cars, a practice that is
opposed to by many BMW enthusiasts.
