Known as one of
the world’s finest luxury vehicles, the Cadillac has entered the realms of
figurative language to mean “la crème de la crème” or “the best of the best”.
Its origins can be traced back to the end of the Henry Ford Company in the
early 1900s. Ford’s financial backers were persuaded by Henry M. Leland to
continue the business with his own contribution of a 1-cylinder engine. Without
Ford, they came up with a new name and chose Cadillac for the French explorer
who had founded Detroit, Antoine Laumet de la Mothe, sieur de Cadillac.
Cadillac is a pioneer in the automobile industry in many ways and has continued
its tradition of excellence and innovation. Now in the stables of General
Motors, Cadillac espouses the rights mentioned in the United States Declaration
of Independence in its slogan “Life. Liberty. And the Pursuit.”
Major Cadillac Milestones:
1910 – Cadillac introduced the first cars with a fully-enclosed cab.
1948 – Cadillac started the tail-fin craze of this era.
1998 – Cadillac introduced the Escalade, its first SUV.
Interesting Cadillac Fact:
In keeping with
its pioneering spirit, Cadillac has had many innovations and firsts under its
name. Because of this, it was twice bestowed the Dewar Trophy, an honor that
Cadillac shares with no other carmaker.
