For decades,
Freightliner has been the leading name in North America when it comes to
heavy-duty trucks and vehicles in classes 3 to 8. These include school buses,
fire and emergency vehicles, and highway tractors. Freightliner’s history dates
back to the 1930s when a company called Consolidated Freightways started to
produce its own line of trucks from Fageols. Fageols were reconstructed to have
enough power to withstand journey up the mountainous regions of North America.
Currently owned by Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner trucks are now under a division
called Daimler Trucks North America. The company maintains their commitment to
provide excellent standards in design, performance and safety.
Major Freightliner Milestones:
1968 – Freightliner introduced the “Vanliner” design, the first to sport an extended-cab setup.
1973 – Freightliner introduced its first conventional truck.
2007 – Freightliner was given the honor of being Train Operator of the Year at the HSBC Rail Business Awards. It was the first rail freight company to win that award.
Important Freightliner Fact:
Freightliner was
included in a series of lawsuits involving Dr. Frank T. Buckley’s patent on a drag-reducing
fairing for highway use on heavy duty trucks. Freightliner was one of a dozen
different defendants, but was the first to prove that the patent was invalid.
This resulted in the dismissal of that suit.
