Founded by
Soichiro Honda (who has been dubbed as the Japanese Henry Ford), Honda Motor
Co., Ltd. had its start producing motorcycles in 1948. In 1959, Honda crossed
over the Pacific to open its first US store in Los Angeles. In the early ‘60s,
it added automobiles in its production line. Currently the fifth largest
carmaker in the world and the first in engine-making, Honda has gone a long way
from its founder’s humble beginnings as a car mechanic. To this day, Honda
continues the man’s legacy of ingenuity and innovation. Its campaign of
expansion has been untiring and consistent.
Major Honda Milestones:
1974 – The Civic Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion engine was able to comply with the Clean Air Act without a catalytic converter, the first to accomplish this feat.
1982 – Honda became the first Japanese carmaker to assemble cars in the US.
2002 – The Honda FCX fuel-cell vehicle became the first of its kind to be certified by the US EPA and the state of California.
Interesting Honda Fact:
Honda was the
first to market a gasoline vehicle that met the Low-Emission Vehicle standard
in all fifty states. In fact, the Honda Civic was the first gasoline ULEV
(Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle and) on the market and the Accord was the first
Super ULEV.
