Isuzu is one of
the pioneers in the manufacture of commercial and industrial vehicles. It is
famous for producing medium to heavy duty trucks and diesel engines. In 2005,
it was the world’s leading manufacturer of trucks in the medium and heavy duty
category. Isuzu is affiliated with many other carmakers and vehicle companies
in the world, usually under contract to manufacture rental trucks for them.
Isuzu’s beginnings can be traced back to the collaboration of Tokyo
Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Gas and
Electrical Industrial Co. to build automobiles. In 1918, the Wolseley Motor
Company from England joined the collaboration and the first Isuzu truck was introduced.
This made Isuzu the first ever Japanese carmaker. The name Isuzu, which comes
from the name of a river, was first given to a truck before the company adopted
the name for itself in 1949. Presently, Isuzu continues to enjoy its reputation
for engineering expertise.
Major Isuzu Milestones:
1959 – Isuzu manufactured the world’s first two-ton, light-duty, forward control truck.
1983 – The Isuzu Aska Diesel Turbo passenger car made world records in 13 diesel categories.
1994 – The Isuzu Rodeo won the Alcan 5000, an 8-day rally from Seattle to the Arctic Circle. It was the first SUV to win in this event. It proceeded to perform a “threepeat” the succeeding winters.
Interesting Isuzu Fact:
Isuzu has been
selling rebadged GMC Canyons, Chevrolet Colorados, and Chevrolet Trailblazers
in the past years. However, General Motors has decided to replace these models
with newer ones that Isuzu can no longer rebadge and sell under its own name.
On account of this, Isuzu has announced its intent to withdraw its vehicles,
with the exception of commercial ones, from the US market effective in 2009.
