The oldest SUV
brand in the world, Jeep is definitely a pioneer and an inspiration for many
later innovations. The term “jeep” arguably originated from an army vehicle
that bore the label GP for “Government or General Purpose”. Some say that the
name came from a Ford car. In 1941, Willys-Overland Inc. demonstrated the
ability of a 4x4 truck, which was referred to as a jeep, by having it driven up
the US Capitol steps. Later, Willys was awarded the right to the name “Jeep” as
registered trademark. Jeep has since changed ownership a few times, but it is
currently within the Chrysler group.
Major Jeep Milestones:
1944 – The first Civilian Jeep was introduced.
1965 – Jeep produced the M715 1.25 ton army truck, which served in Vietnam and continues to be useful in the military of many countries.
2008 – Jeep introduced the Compass, its first small, car-based SUV not meant for off-roading.
Interesting Jeep Fact:
Jeep has inspired
a subculture in the automotive world and has gone on to have new terms coined
from its name, such as “jeeping” and “jeepers”. It also has annual events that
involve entire families of Jeep owners. All these are related to off-roading and
enjoying the outdoors.
