Stemming from a
heated argument between Enzo Ferrari and Ferruccio Lamborghini, the first
Lamborghini car paved the way to the company’s inclusion in the world of exotic
and sophisticated motoring. Lamborghini founded the Automobili Lamborghini
S.p.A. in 1962, but prior to that he was already a successful tractor maker. He
was born under the sign of the Taurus thus his choice of emblem. The
Lamborghini bull represents everything that makes its cars special – defiance,
pride and untamed power. The company has since faced some triumphs and losses,
at one point with Lamborghini having to declare bankruptcy. Ownership changed
hands a few times until the company was fully acquired by Audi AG. Despite the
company’s ups and downs, the Lamborghini name has been consistent in its
reputation for high performance and sophistication.
Major Lamborghini Milestones:
1966 – Lamborghini introduced its first sports car, the Miura, which is also dubbed as the first “supercar”, at the Geneva Auto Show.
1971 – Lamborghini produced the LP500 Countach prototype, which was the first car to feature Lamborghini’s signature scissor doors and vertically mounted rear intakes. It was also among the first cars to sport the Pirelli “P-Zero” tires.
2003 – Lamborghini introduced the 2004 Gallardo, its first four-wheel drive vehicle.
Interesting Lamborghini Fact:
Lamborghini did
not build racing cars during its early years. This was a result of Ferruccio
Lamborghini’s proclamation that his cars would not be involved in motor racing.
Lamborghini thought such a program to be impractical – too expensive and too
demanding for the company.
