Next to Jeep,
Land Rover is the oldest manufacturer of SUVs in the world. In fact, the first
ever Land Rover was designed in 1948 by Rover’s chief designer Maurice Wilks
based on the American World War II Jeep that he had used one summer. Initially,
Land Rover was the name given to a specific model under the Rover label, but it
soon became a marque and then an actual separate company. It was first thought
of with farmers in mind, but Land Rover became so popular that it appealed to
everybody from explorers and celebrities to wealthy mothers and the royal
family. It has since moved around, listing BMW and Ford among its past owners.
It is currently with Tata Motors of India.
Major Land Rover Milestones:
1970 – The famous Range Rover was introduced and displayed at the Louvre Museum.
2004 – Land Rover introduced Range Stormer, its first concept car, and new LR3, which immediately won the Motor Trend SUV of the Year Award.
2005 – Land Rover introduced Range Rover Sport, its first sports tourer. Range Rover also began to feature a supercharged motor, which made it powerful yet quiet.
Interesting Land Rover Fact:
There was a bit
of dispute over a vehicle color introduced by Land Rover as “Stornoway Grey”.
Western Isles councilor Angus Nicolson argued that it would mar the town’s
image by depicting it as drab and dull. He suggested that the name be changed
to “Silvery Stornoway”, but Land Rover insisted that it would do no such thing.
It claimed that the name would even promote the town since grey is a favorite
color for Land Rover vehicles.
