Mazda is one of
the Japanese car brands that have achieved tremendous success in the global
market. The origin of the Mazda name is the anglicized version of the founder’s
family name which is Matsuda. However, it is a stroke of luck that the Mazda
name coincides with an important element in Persian and Zoroastrian cultures. The
company has taken advantage of the fact to make a connection. Founded in 1920
as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd., the company later produced a vehicle called
the Mazda-Go in 1930. After so many years of including Mazda in its different
models’ names, the company decided to adopt the Mazda name for itself in 1984.
Holding true to its “Zoom Zoom” (emotion of motion) slogan, Mazda boasts of the
exhilarating driving experience its cars can offer.
Major Mazda Milestones:
1967 – Mazda introduced the limited production Cosmo Sport, the first of the Mazda cars with the famous Mazda rotary engine.
1989 – Mazda introduced the Mazda Roadster (MX-5 or Miata), the most popular roadster to date, which was also responsible for the revival of the small sports car trend.
1991 – The Mazda 787B won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a victory that remains unparalleled for being the only non-piston engine car and non-European/American car to ever win at Le Mans. This win also led to the ban of rotary engine cars in the race.
Interesting Mazda Fact:
For a number of
years, Mazda was using several different marques in the Japanese and Australian
market. Autozam, Eunos, and Anfini, which have all been phased out for the
confusion they generated, were all under the Mazda group.
