Credited for
inventing the automobile in 1886, Karl Benz of Germany was technically responsible
for the oldest car company in the world. Still in the same country, one
Gottlieb Daimler was also up to the same thing and managed the same feat a few
months later. 1901 saw the creation of Daimler’s first Mercedes car. More than
a decade later, both the company and the car found the name Benz attached to
theirs upon a very important merger in automotive history. As the people behind
Mercedes-Benz would say, “The Legend continues”. More than a century later, the
name remains a pioneer for different innovations, a leader in the automotive
market, and a hallmark of luxury.
Major Mercedes-Benz Milestones:
1978 – Mercedes-Benz introduced a technological breakthrough in the anti-lock brakes.
1981 – Mercedes-Benz produced an S-Class, the first car to carry seatbelts with pre-tensioners. These have become a standard safety feature in automobiles.
2006 – Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to install nitrogen oxide reducing systems (Daimler AG’s BlueTec) in the passenger car category, an astute move that was meant to coincide with the introduction of low-sulphur fuel in the US.
Interesting Mercedes-Benz Fact:
After a racing
tragedy in 1955 that ended with 80 spectators dead, a devastated Mercedes-Benz
pulled out of the racing arena for a significant period of time. When the time
was right, it decided to inch its way back in by first joining rallies. It
officially reentered sports car racing in the late ‘80s. Nowadays,
Mercedes-Benz has a winning team-up with McLaren and is active in Formula 3,
Formula 1 and DTM.
