The Mini is not
only the most popular British car in history, it is also a veritable cultural
icon from the ‘60s. The Mini was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis for the British
Motor Corporation (BMC), the first company to produce it back in 1959. It
underwent several ownerships until it was acquired in 1994 by BMW, which later
produced the successor to the classic car in the form of the BMW MINI (always
spelled in uppercase). Coming up with the MINI was BMW’s way of making the
original concept meet the current standards for production, safety and
emissions.
Major MINI Milestones:
1961 – The Mini Coopers, the first racing Minis, debuted in the market.
1964 – The Mini Cooper S earned its first Monte Carlo Rally victory.
1969 – The Mini Clubman and 1275GT were the first vehicles to have a flexi-printed circuit board behind the dash instruments, as well as run-flat tires.
Interesting MINI Fact:
The Mini was able
to achieve so many firsts, not only in automotive history, but in social
history as well. It was the first mass-produced car with a. front wheel drive,
b. a transverse engine installed in the
front, c. a rubber spring suspension system, d. door pockets at the front and
back, etc. It has also been called the first truly “classless” British car,
affordable to the lower classes and yet equally popular to the peerage.
