The multinational Nissan Motors was officially founded in Japan in 1933, but its origins can be traced back to 1914 when the Kwaishinsha Motorcar Works built its first DAT car. DAT is the acronym of the initials of the partners’ family names (Den, Aoyama, Takeuchi). The company, later renamed DAT Motors, also produced smaller passenger cars, which they branded Datsun (Son of Dat, changing the “son” to “sun” as the former means “loss” in Japanese). The 1930s gave rise to the name Nissan, an abbreviation for the holding company, Nippon Sangyo. This was founded by Yoshisuke Aikawa, who later purchased controlling shares in DAT Motors. The Datsun name continued to be used for the cars until the 1981 official decision to brand all models as Nissan. Today, Nissan continues to explore new directions to bring the driving experience to a higher level while keeping high standards for quality and service.

Major Nissan Milestones:
1958 – A Datsun sedan was marketed in the US for the first time.
1969 – Datsun introduced the 1970 240Z or “Z”, which is the best-selling sports car in the world.
1985 – Paul Newman raced the Newman/Sharp Trans-Am 300ZX and won Nissan’s 50th championship in the national SCCA (Sports Car Club of America).

Interesting Nissan Fact:
Nissan is embracing environmental consciousness and plans to start selling mass-market electric cars in 2012. It plans to mainly target city drivers, a market that the company expects will welcome the innovation. The vision involves selling fleets to companies that can also put up charging stations. Nissan is also investing in hybrid technology, but it favors the all-electric approach as the better option for the planet.
