SAAB
With innovative technology, efficient performance and exceptional care
for safety, Saab has been producing cars that have definitely made their impact
on society. Established in 1937 as a division of the Swedish Aeroplane Company
(Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget), Saab’s original goal was to build aircrafts
for the Swedish Air Force. However, upon the end of World War II, it sought new
markets for its expansion and ventured into automobile manufacturing. It has
since become the only automobile marque to receive the Royal Warrant from His
Majesty, the King of Sweden. Currently a subsidiary of General Motors, Saab
competes in a class with BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo.
Major Saab Milestones:
1987 – Saab’s two millionth car was manufactured and sales exceeded 134,000 cars which made this its best year to date.
1991 – Saab was the first ever car manufacturer to present the CFC-free air conditioning system for cars.
2004 – Saab released the Saab 9-2x, its very first all-wheel drive car designed to deal with any type of weather condition.
Interesting Saab fact:
Saab cars are designed as if patterned after a plane. The first one was
designed, produced and hand-built by 17 aeronautical engineers. Only one of
them had a driver’s license.
