In an attempt to provide the average person a car they could afford, Adolf
Hitler and Ferdinand Porsche masterminded the creation of Volkswagen. They are
currently the fourth largest car producer in the world after Toyota, Ford, and
General Motors. The largest in Europe, the Volkswagen brand is one of the
bestsellers among the various car marques under Volkswagen AG (Volkswagen
group). With its goal of giving the ordinary man a chance at luxury by owning a
car, Volkswagen has unsurprisingly been popular in the automobile market since
World War II.
Major Volkswagen Milestones:
1934 – Dr. Porsche submitted the plan for the “people’s car” to the Government Ministry of Transport. Mercedes Benz produced 30 prototypes after the plan was approved – all were test driven successfully.
1949 – The first luxury version of the Beetle was launched solely for export. By this year, 50000 Beetles had already been produced since the model’s inception.
1972 – This year marked the release of the 15th million Beetle making it the most produced car in history.
Interesting Vollkswagen Fact:
Aptly named for its goal of creating simple cars that everyone could
afford and enjoy, Volkswagen means "people's car" in German.
