With its first car "Jakob" released on April 14, 1927 in
Gothenburg, Sweden, Volvo was born with Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson as
founders. It was a world renowned supplier of commercial vehicles that later
moved on to automobile manufacturing. Volvo has been working hand in hand with
Ford Motor Company since 1999. Considered as one of the premium automobile
manufacturers in the world, the company has always been consistent in keeping
quality and safety as its top priorities.
Major Volvo Milestones:
1977 – Volvo celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with the release of a 240 special model to mark the occasion. Volvo also produced two units of its first environmental concept car, a small two-seater electric vehicle.
2004 – The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), a camera-based system monitoring the driver’s potential blind spot, was presented by Volvo. Together with this, it also presented the side airbag concept for convertibles. Both features were world firsts for cars.
Interesting Volvo Fact:
Company executives realized that the brand name played an important role
in the success of a product. With this in mind, they strove to give their cars
a name that was easy for people to pronounce and spell no matter from what part
of the world they were. They finally came up with Volvo, the Latin word for
“roll”, a term they felt bore significance since their cars had bearings that
roll.
