People are so fond of the Chevrolet that they have given it a nickname: Chevy. It is one of the most popular car brands in the US and it is definitely the most popular marque of General Motors (so much so that the names have become interchangeable for many). The Chevrolet brand derives its name from one of its founders, Louis Chevrolet, a race car driver. Chevrolet joined forces in 1909 with William C. Durant, the founder of General Motors, at the time when the latter was forced out of the company. The two had had previous associations with Chevrolet having raced Buick cars for Durant. Durant had been the head of Buick Motor Company at that time and was able to regain his hold on General Motors. A merger between this and Chevrolet was a subsequent occurrence. Chevrolet continues to be a household name and an important part of American pop culture.

Major Chevrolet Milestones:
1934 – Chevrolet introduced the first cars with independent front suspension.
1953 – Chevrolet introduced the Corvette, the first volume-production dream sports car as well as the first series-production car with a plastic body.
2008 – Chevrolet introduced the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid, one of the first hybrid SUVs on the market.

Interesting Chevrolet Fact:
Much has been speculated about the origin of the famous Chevrolet bowtie emblem. There happen to be several theories:
a. Some say that Durant was inspired by the design of the wallpaper in a French hotel.
b. There are those who say that it was inspired by the Swiss flag and was made in honor of Chevrolet’s land of birth.
c. It may also have very well been derived from a Coalettes ad Durant had seen in a Southern newspaper.
