Chrysler had its
beginnings in the early 1920s and ever since has had considerable contributions
both in automobile and national history. Walter P. Chrysler, who had left an
important position in General Motors to start a career as a “doctor of ailing
automakers”, founded the Chrysler Corporation. The business was born from the
overhauled Maxwell-Chalmers company. Prior to this, Chrysler had also rescued
an ailing Willys company, where he had begun work on the prototype of the
Chrysler Six. This was the first Chrysler automobile, which was launched in
1924. The Chrysler Six provided customers with two significant features:
excellent engineering and affordable price. Later in the century, Chrysler
became an important figure in the campaign to buy American under its new CEO,
Lee Iacoca. To this day, Chrysler continues to uphold its reputation for
innovative engineering and style.
Major Chrysler Milestones:
1934 – Chrysler introduced the wind tunnel-tested Airflow model, which became known as the first truly streamlined car.
1934/1993 – In 1993, Chrysler promoted the allegedly new cab-forward design, placing the rear seat ahead of the rear axle. This is something that they had already done as early as 1934.
1960 – Chrysler introduced the Valiant, the first production automobile to move from electric generators to alternators.
Interesting Chrysler Fact:
Chrysler was the
first American carmaker to export US-built right-hand drive vehicles (the Jeep
Cherokee) for sale in Japan and in Britain.
