In the US market,
Hyundai has been known for its affordability. It made its debut in the US
market in 1986 and has since established itself a comfortable niche in the
automobile industry. The company, founded by Chung Ju-Yung in 1947, began as a
construction company in South Korea. It entered the automobile industry in 1967
and made its first contribution to the world of cars, the Cortina, in
collaboration with Ford. Hyundai took a cautious stance with this new venture,
employing foreign talents and technology and selling only in a few countries.
Hyundai’s success was a steady progression and the company took its growth in
stride. However, in 1998, the time was ripe for an image overhaul and Hyundai
began to present itself as a world-class brand.
Major Hyundai Milestones:
1986 – Hyundai started selling a car, the Excel, in the US. This made a record for selling the most number of cars on its first year of business in the US. It was also featured as the #10 best product by Fortune magazine.
1991 – Hyundai developed its first proprietary gasoline engine and transmission.
1998 – Hyundai acquired its rival Kia Motors.
Interesting Hyundai Fact:
Hyundai had
initially let quality suffer in an attempt to make its car very affordable,
consequently earning an unbecoming reputation for unreliability. It has now
overcome this image. In 2003, Consumer Reports had it tied with Honda when it
comes to reliability. In 2006, JD Power placed it 3rd in quality,
only falling behind Porsche and Lexus. In the same year, Autopacific awarded
Hyundai the “Top-rated Ideal Vehicle” award.
