From the ashes of war rose a company that soon conquered the world of luxury automobiles and motorsports. Porsche can trace its history back to a company called “Dr. ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH” founded by Austro-Hungarian professor Ferdinand Porsche in 1931. It was more of a consultancy firm than a manufacturer and Porsche’s main client was Volkswagen. Along came the war and the chaos that it brought and Porsche found himself not only estranged from Volkswagen, but imprisoned as well. His son Ferry Porsche continued his father’s work with automobiles not only for personal reasons, but for practical ones as well, claiming that he could not find a worthy car on the market. He began building his own cars and before long, Porsche became a car manufacturer to reckon with.

Major Porsche Milestones:
1948 – The historic 356, Porsche’s first car, was produced. A month later, this lightweight mid-engine roadster won at the Innsbruck Stadtrennen.
1968 – The Type 907-8 won Porsche’s first overall victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Besides this, there were also victories on the Nürburgring and the Targa Florio and the 911T triumphed at the Monte Carlo Rally.
1975 – The Porsche 924 was introduced, the company’s first front-engine sports car in transaxle configuration. It also began to use a double-sided galvanizing process for body steel. It was the first car manufacturer to do so.

Interesting Porsche Fact:
Since the ‘90s, Porsche has been learning from Toyota about Japanese production methods. It is also currently being assisted by the Japanese carmaker in its plan to create a hybrid version of the Cayenne and the Panamera.
