Everybody is in awe of
the Rolls-Royce, a brand that represents classic beauty and elegant opulence.
Named for the historic partnership of Frederick Henry Royce and Charles Stewart
Rolls in 1906, Rolls-Royce’s reputation for being the “best car in the world”
was established by its first model, the Silver Ghost. Incidentally, the term was not part of the
company’s publicity pitch and actually originated from the prestigious Autocar
publication. Rolls-Royce expanded its business throughout the years, branching
into several other fields until the company’s nationalization in 1971. This resulted
in the creation of a separate automobile company called Rolls-Royce Motors. The
road to the future may have been dynamic and colorful, but the Rolls-Royce
brand, currently owned by BMW, has remained steadfast in all its prime
qualities.
Major Rolls-Royce Milestones:
1949 – The Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn, the first Rolls-Royce sold as a complete car (with body instead of chassis only), was introduced.
1976 – The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II was the first Rolls-Royce to use rack and pinion steering and was the first car to feature split-level air conditioning.
1985 – Rolls-Royce built its 100,100th car, a Silver Spur centenary, which was retained by the company. However, 25 duplicate Centenarys were to be sold for $125,000 each at that time.
Interesting Rolls-Royce Fact:
Royce had suffered from
a nervous breakdown. Although he was able to recover from that episode, he never
again went back to the plant to work. Instead, he issued directions, including
engineering specifications, by mail. His letters have been bound into a volume
referred to as “the bible” by company executives and it remains a powerful and
influential piece of literature in the company today.
