Carroll Shelby is a legendary figure in the world of automobiles. He was
a celebrated racecar driver up until he retired in 1959 due to health reasons.
It was then that he opened a high performance driving school and the Shelby-American
company. There he designed and built the famous “Cobra” cars. Shelby has worked
with Ford, Dodge and Oldsmobile in developing high-end performance cars, with
the Dodge Viper as the most memorable one. In 2003, Shelby became Ford GT’s technical
advisor and went on to take his company public and create Shelby Automobiles,
Inc.
Major Shelby Milestones:
2003 – Shelby Automobiles, or Shelby American as it was known then, celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Cobra and built a special and limited edition CSX4000.
2006 – The first 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 was sold for $600,000, the proceeds of which were donated to the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation.
2007 – Shelby Automobiles and Scott Drake Enterprises joined forces to create Shelby Performance Parts LLC, a separate company that provides Mustang performance parts and accessories.
Interesting Shelby Fact:
The name “Cobra” came to Carroll Shelby in a dream. The roadster was
already in his shop when he dreamed about the name Cobra appearing on the front
of the car. He woke up, quickly wrote down the name on a pad, and went back to
sleep. When he woke up the next morning and saw the word on the pad, he knew it
was the right name for the car.
