Perhaps unheard of to many, Qvale (pronounced kah-vah-lee) is a new name in the field
of automobile manufacturing, but is not a total newcomer in the world of
automobiles. The Qvale family has, in fact, been involved in importing and
distributing various exclusive car brands in the US for more than half a
century. Bruce Qvale entered into partnership with Alejandro de Tomaso who had
wanted to revive his Bigúa model, a car later renamed the Mangusta. However,
the partnership was dissolved right before the first batch of cars was
delivered. Qvale took over the company and marketed the cars under his name in
2000. The odds were unfortunately against the exotic car with its uncommon name
and equally unusual design. With sales being disappointing, Qvale decided to
sell the rights to the Mangusta to Britain’s MG Rover Group in 2003.
Major Qvale Milestones:
2001 – The Qvale Mangusta placed second on the BF Trans-Am Series temporary street course. Its driver Brian Simo also won second place in the season-end drivers’ points.
2003 – The sale of the Qvale Mangusta renewed association between Qvale and MG, who had done monumental business with each other in the past, such as Qvale’s introduction of the MG brand to the Western United States in 1947.
2004 – The MG SV, an MG Rover sports/luxury car, the foundation of which was the Qvale Mangusta, debuted in the market.
Interesting Qvale Fact:
The name Mangusta
came about as a reaction to Ford giving engines that were promised de Tomaso to
the Shelby Cobra instead. “Mangusta” is Latin for mongoose, an animal that eats
cobras.
