Subaru is a Japanese name for a star cluster commonly known as Pleiades.
It is also the Japanese translation of the words “to govern” or “to unite”.
Subaru is the division under Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd (FHI) which focuses
on automobile production. It is recognized internationally for its all-wheel drive
technology and horizontally-opposed engines. Subaru, in fact, makes the
best-selling all-wheel drive car in the US today. FHI has formed an alliance with
Toyota Motor Corporation to share technologies and to work towards the common
goal of bringing automobiles to a higher level.
Major Subaru Milestones:
1954 – The name Subaru was chosen by Mr. Kenji Kita, CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries. This year also saw the release of Subaru’s very first car called the Subaru P1.
1958 – Fuji released its first mass-produced car, the Subaru360 Minicar.
1972 – Subaru showed the world what four-wheel drive is capable of with its release of Leone 4WD Station Wagon. It was the first to produce four-wheel drive passenger cars in the world.
Interesting Subaru Fact:
Their logo represents the star cluster “Pleiades”. The big star stands
as Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd, and the other five smaller stars represent
the five companies currently under it.
