Currently the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, Toyota also
tops surveys for the most popular car in the world. Kichiro Toyoda took his
father's machine company, Toyota Industries, towards automobile creations in
1937. This was after releasing their first product type A engine the year
before that. Now, the company has over a hundred different car models and
specifications that not only keep up with, but also set trends for these modern
times. Toyota currently has 40 vehicle assembly plants all over the world and
12 research and development centers which employ around 310,000 people. Even
with its global success, Toyota has kept its headquarters in Japan.
Major Toyota Milestones:
1935 – The first Toyota dealership was established and its very first vehicle, the model G1 truck, was built.
1989 – The luxury Lexus brand was introduced in North America.
2006 – Toyota was heralded as the world’s biggest automaker after having exceeded General Motor’s global sales by 128,000.
Interesting Toyota Fact:
The company was originally named Toyoda, from the founder’s last name, Kiichiro
Toyoda. However, they changed the “d” to a “t” to make it rhyme. Also, in
Chinese, eight is a lucky number and “Toyota” is written with eight strokes in
katakana, a Japanese syllabry.
